Request chat records
For university administrations, legal counsel, courts and law enforcement. UniTalk is a chat app for verified university students; this is the one way to ask us for records of what was said in it. Students who want a copy of their own data write to team@unitalk.ca instead.
What we can provide
- Messages in a course chat, a project group or a direct-message conversation, with the sender’s name, university email and the time sent, including messages the sender edited or deleted within the last 180 days.
- The messages one account sent across the app, and that account’s profile details.
We do not keep deleted text beyond 180 days, we do not monitor chats live, and nothing is released from this page: a person reviews every request first.
How it works
- Fill in the form with your organisation’s email address. We send a link there; the request only reaches our team once you confirm it.
- You get a reference number, and a member of the UniTalk team reviews the request and follows up with you by email. Nothing is released automatically: records are provided only after that review and the approval of a UniTalk administrator. Where a court order, subpoena, production order or written consent applies, we ask you to send the document by email first.
- Where the law allows and it would not put anyone at risk, we may tell the students concerned that their records were requested.
- If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services first, then mark the request urgent.
The request
We keep what you enter here to handle the request and as a record of it. See our privacy policy.
